The international conflict in Afghanistan began in 2001 after the September 11 terrorist attacks on the world trade centre. After the attacks, Osama bin Laden, the founder of al-Qaeda, was given protection from the Taliban after fleeing from America. This led to the a pursuit from the American and NATO military. Although the US government decided to fight a war against terrorism, terrorists are difficult enemies to fight because of their loyalty to fight for a cause, not a country. The military response to the attacks was called Operation Enduring Freedom Freedom, which involved The Pentagon (headquarters of the US Department of Defence) sending warplanes and aircraft carrier groups to Afghanistan. In a televised news conference, the current President, George Bush, said “the United States military has begun strikes against Al Qaeda terrorist training camps and military installations of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. These carefully targeted actions are designed to disrupt the use of Afghanistan as a terrorist base of operations and to attack the military capability of the Taliban regime."
